About Karni Mata Temple
Deshnok is known for the Karni Mata Temple, which is 600 years old and which is also known as temple of rats. Since a long time ago, both the royal family and the people of Bikaner and other parts of Rajasthan have worshiped the goddess Karni Mata. The road distance from Jaipur to Deshnok is 331 km, and the road distance from Bikaner to Deshnok is 30 km.
This temple is the most popular place for tourists to visit in Bikaner. It is known as the Karni Mata Mandir. The temple is for Karni Mata, who the locals think is an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Durga, the Mother Goddess who protects. Hindu warrior sage Karni Mata was from the Charan caste and lived in the 1400s. Karni Mata lived as an ascetic, which made her very respected by the people around her and helped her gain many followers. When the Maharajas of Jodhpur and Bikaner asked her to, she even put the first stones down for the Mehrangarh and Bikaner Forts. Even though there are a lot of temples to her, this one in the town of Deshnoke, 30 kilometres from Bikaner, is the most well-known.
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE TEMPLE?
The Karni Mata Mandir in Bikaner is well-known not because of its location or design, but because it is home to more than 25,000 rats that freely move around the temple complex. You can see these creatures coming out of cracks in the walls and floors. They often walk over the feet of visitors and worshippers. Here, it is a holy practise to eat food that rats have nibbled on. People from all over India and even from other countries come to see this amazing show and bring milk, sweets, and other gifts for these holy beings. White rats are thought to be the reincarnations of Karni Mata and her sons, making them the most holy of all rats. Visitors try very hard to get them to come out, often by giving them sweets. But hurting or killing a rat in this temple, even by accident, is a very bad thing. As punishment, the person who did this crime will have to replace the dead rat with a golden one.
In addition to the interesting traditions, the Karni Mata temple is also linked to some interesting stories. The most well-known of these stories is the one about Laxman, who was Karni Mata’s step-son. Laxman drowns one day when he tries to drink water from the Kapil Sarovar in Kolayat Tehsil. Karni Mata is very sad about her son’s death, so she prays hard to Yama, the Hindu God of Death, to bring him back to life. At first, Yama says no to her request. But because of her sadness and determination, he gives in to her pleas and reincarnates Laxman and all of Karni Mata’s male children as rats.
TEMPLE ARCHITECTURE
At the beginning of the 20th century, Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner finished building the Karni Mata Temple. The whole temple is made of marble, and its design looks like it was made in the Mughal style. The marble facade is pretty, and the solid silver doors that lead into the compound inside make it even more so. The many stories about the Goddess are shown on the panels of the silver doors. The statue of Karni Mata of Bikaner, which is 75 cm tall and holds a trident (trishul) in one hand and a crown and garlands on the other, is in the innermost part of the temple. On either side of the idol of the Goddess are those of her two sisters. In 1999, a Karni jeweller from Hyderabad named Kundan Lal Verma did more work to improve the temple. The silver gates and marble carvings he gave to the temple were his work.
